I’ve been a bit absent from blogging recently, thanks to the social black hole that is NaNoWriMo. As much fun as it’s been – look out for my final post about it later this week – I’m looking forward to getting back to the world of Happy Things, and taking a little break from murder, divorce, suicide and the like. (In case anyone was expecting my novel to be cheerful – it really, really isn’t.)
In the meantime, I thought I’d share a few of my friends’ blogs to keep you entertained. Full disclosure – I know all these people in real life, but that doesn’t make their blogs any less fabulous. So enjoy, and I’ll be back with the usual random nonsense very soon. Hurrah!
My sister Caz has taken up photography relatively recently, and in her blog she shares some of her amazing photos and charts her progress from beginner to professional (no pressure, Caz). Personally I think she left the self-imposed title of ‘fledgling photographer’ behind a long time ago, but then I guess I’m a bit biased.
Mandy is a relatively new friend of mine, who I first got to know through the wonder of Twitter. Her blog, Emm in London, is all about her travels and experiences as a ‘serial expat’ (her words) living in the UK. She also has two other great blogs – Addicted to Media (reviews of film, TV, books, music, you name it) and A Passion to Understand, which tries to make sense of the world we live in and the horrible things that happen. It’s really a wonder she gets anything else done 😉
The owner of this blog, Sian, is an old friend (and before she gets offended, let me clarify, I mean a friend I’ve known a long time). A couple of years ago, Sian made the decision to take early retirement, pack up and move to Turkey, and I think it’s safe to say it’s one of the best things she’s ever done. The blog doesn’t get updated all that often these days, mostly because she’s out doing stuff, but her old posts are still a really useful (and hilarious) resource for anyone considering a move abroad.
My colleague Ioana arrived in London just over a year ago from Romania. She’s a very happy person and determined to see the positive in everything, even when nobody else can. Her blog considers how to be happy from various angles: fashion, work, exercise, food, discovering new places… And of course the burning question – what exactly does it mean to be British?
Another colleague, whose name is not Robin but for some reason chooses to go by it anyway. As a self-confessed language geek and translator, her blog focuses in the main on these subjects and is a great read for anyone interested in languages. But she also features book reviews, travel articles and more advice on how to be British. Apparently that’s what people want to know. Maybe I should do one of those…?
Ok, ok, so this is my work blog, but it’s still awesome, especially if you’re interested in languages or travel. Even if you’re not, you should still go and check it out. I promise it’s not only me who writes for it.
That’s all for now. I’ve quite enjoyed sharing my recommendations, and I’m always looking for new blogs to follow, so let me know if you have any suggestions!
Right – back to writing about murder and stuff. Under 5,000 words to go…!
