NaNoWriMo – week 3

This week I’ve lost my rhythm entirely with NaNoWriMo, which means my word count slowed down quite a lot. My discipline seems to have totally abandoned me, which is a problem, so today I’ve been relying on friends to nag and cheer me on for the final stretch. It seems to be working; I’ve written about 8,000 words since 11am this morning 🙂

The main issue I’m facing currently is how to bring the book to an end. I’d always planned my ending, and I don’t want to change it, but it turns out getting everyone where they need to be for it to happen is harder than I thought. And it doesn’t help that I had a brilliant idea the other night, which might help with the ending, but has also changed quite a lot about the story. So in order for it to make any kind of sense, there’s going to need to be quite a lot of rewriting. Then again, I was planning to do that anyway, so it’s not the end of the world.

Today, I also had to write my first murder scene, which stressed me out so much that I had to have a break afterwards, and look at some photos of cute animals to calm down. It’s not the first scene I’ve struggled with; towards the end of my story, it all gets a bit violent, and that’s not something I have much experience of. Maybe I need to go and start a few fights for research…?

But the good news is that I’ve now officially won my first NaNoWriMo, which is very exciting!

NaNoWriMo winner

And I’m still aiming to reach 100k by next weekend… I won’t get another winner’s badge if I do, but I will reward myself with cake. Which might be better.

Current word count: 90,345

Highlight: when I checked my word count earlier and it was 88,888. That was fun. (I may need to get out more.)
